Georgia Professional Standards Commission Meeting Report - November 2023

The following topics were discussed during the Georgia Professional Standards Commission’s (GaPSC) monthly meetings on Nov. 8-9, 2023:

Ethics

Laurin Vonada, director of educator ethics, shared a presentation on educators' right to reapply for certification.

An educator who has had their certificate revoked may petition for the right to reapply by showing:

  • The reason for revocation has ceased to be a factor.

  • Three years have lapsed since the revocation. If that petition is denied, an additional two years must lapse unless the commission determines otherwise.

  • The educator must satisfy certification renewal requirements.

An individual who has had their certificate denied may petition for the right to reapply by showing:

  • The reason for denial has ceased to be a factor.

  • Two years have lapsed since the denial. If that petition is denied, an additional year must lapse.

  • The educator must satisfy certification renewal requirements.

The commission found no probable cause to sanction an educator who mistakenly answered “yes” to a question regarding prior disciplinary action on a certification application. The educator disclosed a prior sanction by the GaPSC when the question did not require him to do so.
